Sam is Severntec Diving’s youngest member as a RAID junior open water diver.

How did it start?
For Sam, tagging along at Severntec’s pool sessions, zipping around on a small underwater scooter was always a bit of fun with his friends. But as soon as he turned 10, he was able to start training for his RAID junior open water diver certification.
This qualification allows a junior diver to a maximum depth of 12 metres/50 feet under supervision, and the course consists of 2 hours logged underwater in open water over 4 training dives.
Next for Sam was fun at Porth Ysgaden, Wales, where Severntec ran a diving day for the next generation.

Training online
On a part-family holiday, part-dive club trip to Malta to visit Paradise Diving, Kevin and Sam Murphy decided to get in the water and get Sam signed off as a junior diver. But first he needed to do the online training…
Sam was able to complete the coursework at home, online using RAID’s e-learning technology. Once he’d worked hard on the theory section of the course, he was able to fly to Malta with the crew, learn about the kit, skills and drills, and jump in the sea!

Put through his paces
Sam was put through his paces by none other than his father Kevin Murphy, along with the team from Paradise Diving in Malta. He learned about kit configuration, skills, finning techniques, navigation, and so much more…
Kev didn’t go easy on him – on Sam’s qualifying dive he navigated from the shore to the wreck of the World War II wreck of the Maori, off the shore of Valletta, Malta. He succeeded and got back to shore to have qualified as a junior open water diver!
